How to be a gentleman

Style is more than fabric, suits, and ties. For men, true style is being a gentleman. Just because we don’t use that word--gentleman--often doesn’t mean the principles of being a well-mannered man are less important today than a hundred years ago. Indeed, one might make a case that with the increase in digital and virtual communication, the need to be a gentleman is far greater today than ever before.

For a handy, succinct, and memorable guide for manly manners, pick up a copy of How to Be a Gentleman by John Bridges. His Ten Eternal Truths of the Gentlemanly Life are worth repeating often. Here are the first four, quoted from page xv:

1. A gentleman says “please” and “thank you,” readily and often.
2. A gentleman does not disparage the beliefs of others--whether they relate to matters of faith, politics, or sports teams.
3. A gentleman always carries a handkerchief, and is ready to lend it, especially to a weeping lady, should the need arise.
4. A gentleman never allows a door to slam in the face of another person--male or female, young or old, absolute stranger or longtime best friend.

To get the other six Eternal Truths and a solid guide for being a gentleman, stop by the store to pick up your copy of How to Be a Gentleman. You can also “publish” your own gentleman truths on our Twitter page.
